Crazy, crazy name but my goodness does this estate make some awesome wines. A little facts first though methinks….
What does Boekenhoutskloof mean? Ravine of the Bokenhout of course! And what is a bokenhout? It’s an indigenous Cape Beech Tree that’s used for furniture making. You’ll notice on the bottle an array of chairs which is testament to an 18th century furniture maker for his ability to craft nature into beauty a bit like they do now do there in the ‘kloof.
Semillon was a once widely planted variety in South Africa now however it’s share hold of the land is somewhat miniscule. This little beauty proves why it’s such a great variety! A little bit of barrel fermentation teases out the more custard apple nature of the Semillon some herbal elegance, lime and silky texture.
Simply one of the greatest white wines I have tasted from S.A and now in three fantastic vintages!
