Zinfandel, Mancini Ranch, Joseph Swan Vineyards, Russian River Valley Lively redcurrant and blackberry with spicy pepper on the nose. The tannins are well rounded and controlled. 2   Merloblu, VdT Dr. Fugazza
Merloblu, VdT Dr. Fugazza The estate extends over 120 hectares, of which 80 are DOC vineyard. The high quality wines, for which it has long been renowned, derive primarily from its mild, breezy climate, the marine-based soil and the careful selection of the best-suited clones. Wines are produced under two DOC: Oltrepo Pavese, comprising the classic reds Barbera, Bonarda, Pinot Nero and Rosso Oltrepo; and Colli Piacentini, encopassing Gutturnio, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malvasia and Chardonnay. The more prestigious reserve wines, matured in small, oak barrels, reveal the dedication and love of the land that have made the owners, Maria Giulia and Giovannella, true "Donne del Vino" (Women of Wine). An excellent partner in crime with the Pinot Nero, again un oaked and as Jancis Robinson describes it’s ‘admirably delicious!’ Slightly bitter notes mixed with silky rich plumy fruit make an excellent wine.

3   The Pugilist One Chain Cabernet Sauvignon
The Pugilist One Chain Cabernet Sauvignon Easily one of our most popular wines. This Cab Sauv comes from the Limestone Coast in South Australia, an already well known area that produces some of the finest Australian Cabs around. I’ve got to admit, the best description for this wine has got to be the one on the back of the bottle, which reads: “Sometimes you've got to stick up for yourself...Fight for what is right in this world and uphold some good old fashioned values. Of course, one must always retain one's manners and obey the rules - just ask the Pugilist. He's powerful, thick skinned but well bred and with the manners and sense of fair play of a true gent. We all know that Cabernet has taken a bit of a beating but the Pugilist, with its well judged power and pace, shows just why it is the big hitter of all of the grape varieties. Elegant and poised yet rugged and strong, it is the epitome of the iron fist in the silken glove.” Even without the cool personification, this is a fantastic wine, and an excellent accompaniment to the other wines in the One Chain range that we stock like ‘The Opportunist.’ Excellent value for money, too.

4   Chateau Duhart-Milon 2005 (12 bottle case in-Bond)
Chateau Duhart-Milon 2005 (12 bottle case in-Bond) One case of 12 x 75cl bottles in-bond Only offered for sale as a whole case (i.e. we will not split the case) What's it like? We quote Robert Parker jnr and the Wine Advocate "The finest Duhart-Milon ever made? This structured, tannic, dense ruby/purple-tinged Pauillac offers up hints of cassis, licorice, chocolate, and earth. Medium to full-bodied with good purity, strong tannins, and undeniable elegance, it reveals a character not dissimilar from its renowned sibling, Lafite-Rothschild. A blend of 71% Cabernet Sauvignon and 29% Merlot, it is unquestionably outstanding, but to my taste, slightly less opulent than the estate’s ethereal 2003. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2030" Score: 94 Robert Parker, Wine Advocate (176), April 2008

7   Carmenere 'Orzada', Odfjell
Carmenere 'Orzada', Odfjell Orzada is the Spanish word for steering a sailboat up against the wind, the English word is jibe and no doubt there’s a French, Italian, Polish, American word too. What this has to do with wine is anyone’s guess. Names aside these are cracking value for money varietals all of which are 100% of the specified grape (unlike many other so called single varieties). Sensible amount of oak and good elevation allow for excellent balanced and taut wines to be created. The red grape of Chile expresses charming black fruit, chocolate, coffee, truffle, plums and a little cassis. Rounded on the palate with velvety tannin and a long powerful finish.
